The original office building was built in 1913 as headquarter for the "Königliche Bahndirektion" and formed the bank of the Rhein and the skyline of cologne with its impressive neoclassical front at that time. The building resides in good position at the left bank of the Rhein not far from the Kölner Dom and the central station.
After acquisition of the building by the Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer Köln GmbH & Co. KG it was remodeled to a state-of-the-art office building going by the project name "Neue Direktion Köln". In this building activity the inner building fabric was dismantled and replaced by a new building. The main part of the historic front was preserved, it was renovated and integrated into the new building.
The building combines the architectual qualities of the historical building with a modern configuration while considering the technical and energetical standards of a modern office building.
The Neue Direktion sets standards in minimzing the consumption of energy and ressources, the amplified usage of renewable ressources, the smallest strain on the ecosystem as possible as well as the establishment of modern working areas.
This is why the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen (DGNB) rewards the office building Neue Direktion Köln with a certificate in gold.
Dabei blieb ein Großteil der historischen denkmalgeschützten Fassaden erhalten, sie werden saniert und in den Neubau integriert. Der Neubau vereint die architektonischen Qualitäten der historischen Bahndirektion mit einer modernen Gestaltung unter Berücksichtigung der technischen und energetischen Standards eines modernen Bürogebäudes. Die Neue Direktion setzt Maßstäbe bei der Minimierung des Verbrauchs von Energie und Ressourcen, der verstärkten Nutzung erneuerbarer Ressourcen, der möglichst geringen Belastung des Naturhaushalts sowie der Schaffung moderner Arbeitswelten. Aus diesem Grund zeichnet die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen (DGNB) das Bürogebäude Neue Direktion mit einem Gütesiegel in GOLD aus.
